Dear Readers, ♥️
I wrote this love letter to my hometown while walking along the Allegheny River this past Sunday.

The Poet to Her Hometown May 18
Thank God for the place I’m from.
Rivers deciding to cut through mountains,
trains barreling over the tracks,
saw hitting metal in darkest night.
Thank God I learned
that the only way to get anything
is through good-old-fashioned hard work;
laying the bricks,
putting in the hours,
staying until the job is done.
Thank God I learned
that people build legacies
to be carried on by their children,
that life has brutal seasons,
and absolutely beautiful ones, too.
Thank God for this underdog town
that has shown me, again and again,
that defeat can never stop me,
that I can laugh and love my way out of hell.
Thank God for this hardworking,
working-class town
that will never leave my blood,
no matter where my life takes me.
So bring me what’s tough,
what’s hard
and what’s real.
You’ll never break
this iron-born,
riverworn,
winter-blazed spirit of mine.
For my heart was forged ‘neath the bridges of steel.
